Know Yourself

You have made the decision to take the first step along the exciting route of developing your own business, but before you rush off and start designing that first web page, just take a minute or two to take stock of yourself.

Ask yourself the following questions?

• What experience do I have at working for myself?
• How motivated am I to keep on working when things are getting rough? (believe me, you will have times when you wished you back at that 9 till 5 job!)
• Do I have the will to win?
• How good am I at managing my time?
• Am I well organised?
• Do I have my families support?
• What skills do I need to obtain in order to build the business?
• Am I really going to enjoy working on the topic I have chosen?
• What are my priorities over the next twelve months?
• or the next five years?

Write down the answers to these questions, and any others that you feel are relevant to you and discuss them with your wife/partner/family. Do they share the same views as you on your strengths and weaknesses?

In some of the areas you identify, I will be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction - learning business skills, time management etc. but only you know if you have the temperament and the will power to succeed.

Many years ago, I read the following, which has stayed with me now for over 20 years:-

"A man (or woman) will always do what he really wants to do, not what he would really like to do."

In other words, what I would like to do is to study law at night school and train to become a lawyer, but what I really want to do is go out with the boys for a few beers or to watch a game!

I believe that we are all capable of achieving great things, but only a few of us have the willpower or the drive to really succeed - do you?
